A carrier poses on skis, with an 80–pound pack of mail on his back, while on the mail route from Rocky Bar, Idaho, to Atlanta, Idaho. This 16–mile route was one of the most dangerous in the country. Between 1892 and 1913, seven carriers lost their lives in snow slides.
